October 2009 Rural Newsletter
Dear Readers,
In this month's newsletter we look at considerations for early weaning in beef cattle, also implementing weaning strategies to minimise problems in both foals and mares. Other spring topics include Paterson's Curse poisoning in horses and preventing flystrike in sheep - act now to control early emerging flies and avoid a fly-wave over summer.
Weaning Woes
Separating a foal from its dam is guaranteed to produce some anxiety in both animals. This is almost inevitably followed by at least a brief slowdown in foal growth and condition. Foals are also at a somewhat greater risk of disease and injury during the weaning process. Broodmares occasionally develop mastitis. Click here for more...
Flystrike In Sheep
The most prevalent and important cause of flystrike in Australia is the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina. This fly initiates more than 90% of all strikes on susceptible sheep. Prevention of fly strike relies on understanding the fly life-cycle and the institution of appropriate management and control measures. Click here for more...
Early Weaning of Beef Calves
Early weaning has become more popular in recent years for a number of reasons including better utilisation of limited feed and as a drought management tool. There is plenty of experience to show that it can be done well. However, if it is not done well the impact on weaner survival rate and performance can be significant. Click here for more...
Paterson’s Curse Poisoning In Horses
Paterson’s Curse (Salvation Jane) is a plant that is extremely toxic to horses, most commonly resulting in chronic liver failure due to repeated intake of the plant when pasture is scarce, such as after a drought or a fire. Click here for more...

Regular worming for tapeworms should be an important part of all horse parasite control programs. Many common horse-worming products do not control tapeworms. Choose a broad-spectrum worming product such as EQUIMAX, which is effective against all horse worms including tapeworms. Click here to find out more...
The Worminator tool is a two-year rotational strategic worm control program designed specifically to target small redworms, bots and tapeworms in horses. It is recommended as a guide for pasture fed horses and should be combined with good worm control management.
