Travelling With Your Cat Disclaimer
Petalia Resident Vet
Your cat can travel safely by car or plane as long as it is properly restrained.

Car travel   Top
Your cat can travel safely in the car with you in a cat cage or carrier. Never let the cat roam freely in the car as it may get under your feet, distract you, or hide under the seat and escape when you get out of the car. The cage or carrier may be secured by a seat belt.

Make sure your cat always wears its collar and ID tag, as well being microchipped ( ask your vet for more information on microchipping). Even if your cat is secure in its carrier, you should always be prepared for unforeseen situations. Having a lead or a harness with you may be useful if you want to let your cat out for a short break on a long trip, or if you are taking your cat to the vet.

Line the carrier with newspaper or a towel to keep your cat comfortable. If you are planning a long trip, you will need a larger cage with room for a small litter box. Have water available for your cat and some dry biscuits.

Some cats may get carsick. Prescription drugs from your vet are more reliable than over-the-counter products. Your vet will recommend the best treatment and the correct dosage.

Never leave your cat in a parked car in warmer weather, even with the windows down. Even on an overcast day the temperature inside can rise to lethal degrees within minutes. Heat stress can be a killer.

Plane travel   Top
Your cat may also travel safely by plane. Suitable carriers must be airline-approved. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has specific regulations regarding pet carrier size and it is best to contact the airline itself for their requirements concerning your cat. Sedation is generally not recommended, as the effects may be unpredictable and not safe for your cat at high altitudes. Your cat should have a thorough health examination by your vet before plane travel is considered.
